Are You An Ant Or A Grasshopper in Your Business?

Summer is a time for fun….lots of ice cream, vacations with my family, gardening, time spent on any body of water, crab feasts, family game nights, a glass of wine on the deck in the evening, adventures with the kids, and so much more.

I also think of one of Aesop’s Fables each summer: The Ant and the Grasshopper. Summer is usually a quiet time for our business. Clients typically don’t request many meetings, and client acquisition slows down. We take the “ant approach” with in-house projects in the summer. It’s time for our team to write more blog posts, manage our own social media accounts (we are often too busy with client accounts!), and implement improvements to our website – which typically receives very little attention from the team during the busy months.

We’ve recently worked with several clients who also embrace this proactive mindset. Here are three examples:

  1. Laying the Foundation for a New Venture

One client came to us early in the planning stages of launching a new business. Instead of waiting until opening day to scramble for visibility, they are using the summer period to build a strong foundation. From setting up their website and refining their messaging to developing a solid content and social media strategy, they’re positioning themselves for a strong debut and long-term growth.

  2. Scaling with Intention

Another client—a seasoned professional looking to scale—used a quieter business cycle to make big moves. They’ve invested in a digital media strategy and fine-tuned their communication efforts. These steps might not produce immediate results, but they’re designed to pay off significantly in the months ahead.

  3. Building Momentum Before Launch

A third client is preparing to open a new location in the near future. Recognizing the value of early preparation, they’ve engaged us to handle everything from web development and content creation to email campaigns and social media planning. By building momentum ahead of time, they create buzz and ensure they won’t be starting from zero on day one.

We all need moments to rest, recharge, and enjoy life outside of work—whether it’s taking a vacation, spending time with family, or just stepping away from the usual routine. But in between those well-deserved breaks, I invite you to ask yourself:

What small, intentional steps can I take now that will set me up for success in the future?

Summer is the perfect time to revisit your goals, refine your message, or finally tackle that project you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s scheduling time to write blog posts in advance, updating your portfolio or website, refreshing your brand visuals, or even reaching out to a few new contacts to start conversations for future collaborations.

Remember: the ant didn’t build an empire overnight—it prepared a little at a time, consistently, even when things were quiet. You don’t have to overhaul everything in one burst. Small, strategic actions add up—and they can make a huge difference when the pace picks up again.

So take a breath. Have fun. And then carve out just a little time to invest in your own growth. And remember, if you need help, contact us.

You’ll thank yourself later.
